Pro-LGBT Organization 'Run with Pride' Launches Congressional Strategy

On Wednesday, Nov. 1st, Run with Pride officially announced its launch. The pro-LBGT political organization stated that its intention is to elect more LGBT Democratic candidates to U.S. Congress. In an email to supporters, Alex Garcia, one of the board members to the organization and an openly LGBT elected official from California, stated “As an openly LGBT elected official myself, I know the importance of electing more LGBT people to government. The positive impact of having an LGBT official in the conversation when legislation is being introduced or discussed is immeasurable.” Run with Pride would be the only national organization exclusively dedicated to electing LGBT Democratic candidates to U.S. Congress.
Currently there are only seven openly LGBT Members of Congress, something Run with Pride says it plans to change. In their launch email, the group officially announced the endorsement of thirteen candidates they plan to support. To receive an endorsement, a candidate must openly identify as LGBT, support LGBT issues, and be running for Congress as a Democrat. Their first round of endorsements are as follows; Tammy Baldwin (U.S. Senate-WI), Kyrsten Sinema (U.S. Senate-AZ), Mark Pocan (WI-02), Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18), David Cicilline (RI-01), Mark Takano (CA-41), Brianna Westbrook (AZ-08), Lauren Baer (FL-18), David Richardson (FL-27), Angie Craig (MN-02), Jamie McLeod-Skinner (OR-02), John Duncan (TX-06), and Gina Ortiz Jones (TX-23).
Started by a group of LGBT political staffers, Run with Pride says it hopes to “advance national LGBT equality through legislation by electing LGBT people to be influential leaders for equality in Congress”. Beyond just endorsing campaigns, Alex Garcia went on to say “we will work with campaigns one on one to provide real support where needed. Eventually I hope our group can even take a proactive role in recruiting candidates as well.” To learn more, visit
